Main Story
Aviation authorities across the globe have grounded the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft after the aircraft model suffered its second deadly crash within months. The first crash was a new Boeing 737 Max 8 flight operated by Lion Air; it went down over the Java Sea in October 2018, killing 189 people. Another brand new Boeing 737 Max 8, flown by Ethiopia Airlines, crashed on March 10, 2019 in Ethiopia killing all people on board within minutes of takeoff.

Following the second crash, aviation regulatory boards across the globe have directed airlines to ground their 737 Max 8 aircrafts with immediate effect. At least 40 countries, including India, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Oman, UAE, Egypt, Kuwait, New Zealand and all EU member states have grounded the Boeing 737 Max 8.

Many nations including India, Malaysia, Singapore, UAE, Kuwait, New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom and the entire European Union have banned the aircraft from entering their airspace altogether.

In the latest update, USA & Canada joined the growing list of nations banning the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircrafts from their airspace.

Other airlines that have grounded their Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft include Ethiopian Airlines, Aeromexico, Aerolineas Argentinas, Cayman Airways, Comair Airways, Eastar Jet, GOL Linhas Aereas, Icelandair, Fly Dubai, Fiji Airways, Russia’s S7 Airlines, Sunwing Airlines, Norwegian Airlines and Turkish Airlines.

This has resulted in cancellation of many flights across the globe and an escalation in flight prices as well.

More than 70 machines now in action at Heathrow Terminal 5

Automated bag-drop machines speed up the process of checking in a bag, while hosts are on hand to ensure airline’s high standard of customer service

Part of the airline’s continued £6.5 billion investment to enhance customer experience

British Airways has announced the completion of a major milestone in improving customer service at its Heathrow Hub. As part of its multi-billion overhaul, the airline has installed dozens of hosted bag-drop machines at its home at Heathrow, taking the total number of hosted bag-drop machines to 72 in Terminal 5 alone.

The new machines cut down the time taken to tag and process a bag, and essentially reduces queuing time for customers. The kiosks provide users with clear instructions and customer service agents are also at hand for assistance.

Over 3.5 million customers have already used the new technology so far.

Commenting on the new investment, Yannick Berneau, Head of Customer Experience at Terminal 5, British Airways said, "Removing the ‘desk’ as a physical barrier between customers and our agents allows us to offer the more personalised service that British Airways prides itself on. Hosted bag-drops are a great combination of automation and traditional customer service. The introduction of automation across the terminal has meant that our customers avoid queues and enjoy a faster, smoother journey through the airport."

A press release announcing the investment stated, "As part of British Airways’ investment for customers the airline is also enhancing its service training for airport customer service agents, providing them with iPads with specialised apps to enable the first representative a customer encounters to solve their issue or problem."

Etihad Airways has announced that it has completed the successful implementation of the newest guidelines and recommendations for flight tracking, ahead of the General Civil Aviation Authority’s (GCAA’s) proposed deadline of 1 June 2019. The recommendations were set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The airline can now track its flights for positional updates every 15 minutes under normal circumstances and every minute in times of aircraft distress. The airline has achieved this capability in partnership with SITA. These capabilities have become very important following the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 in 2014; the flight disappeared without a trace over the Indian Ocean.

Commenting on the announcement, John Wright, Vice President Network Operations at Etihad Airways said, "Safety of our guests and crew at Etihad Airways remains our number one priority. Implementing this technology across our entire network is an exciting and ground-breaking milestone and we’re thrilled to have achieved this before the local mandate is in full effect."

As an international airline operating across some areas with limited ground-based receivers and air traffic surveillance, Etihad Airways now has comprehensive coverage, eliminating gaps over the oceanic regions, large parts of the African continent and polar airspace.

"In addition to the provision of real-time 4D aircraft positions, the technology offers other insightful capabilities to both anticipate and avoid adverse weather conditions and optimise fuel efficiency," Mr. Wright added.

The airline has been able to operate this new flight tracking system by utilizing the existing onboard ADS-B OUT technology, eliminating the need to install new equipment on its aircraft.

Etihad Airways has announced free luggage allowance for golfers visiting Abu Dhabi's renowned golf courses. The free luggage allowance includes an additional golf bag containing one set of clubs, one pair of golf shoes, and a golf umbrella or parasol. The move has been made in commitment to promoting Abu Dhabi as a global sporting destination.

Commenting on the new announcement, Hareb Al Muhairy, Senior Vice-President Destination & Leisure Management at Etihad Airways said, "The capital’s golf courses are some of the many highlights of a visit to the UAE and it is our pleasure to welcome and encourage golfers to the city. The launch of this free service will encourage golf lovers worldwide to enjoy the sport with greater ease in one of the most beautiful destinations in the world."

A press release announcing the allowance stated, "Golf plays a key role in Abu Dhabi’s tourism strategy, as golfers stay longer and spend around two and a half more days in the capital than the average tourist. Golfers often travel with their families, expanding the number of tourists that the city is able to attract."
